How the Thundershirt Might Help Your Dog
Another type of anxiety wrap for dogs is the Thundershirt. It uses the same principle as the Anxiety Wrap, putting pressure on the body of the anxious dog, helping to calm it.
It features soft, breathable, washable fabric and comes in several different sizes and colors to fit your dog.
As with the Anxiety Wrap, the Thundershirt uses gentle, constant pressure to bring focus and calmness back to an over-stimulated dog.
Some of the many types of stressful situations that can be helped by the Thundershirt include thunder, barking, separation anxiety, gun shots and fireworks.
Just like anything new that is introduced to your dog, it may take a little while to get used to wearing the wrap, so it should be introduced to your dog while he or she is calm and left on for only a short period of time and then removed. Doing this until your dog is very comfortable wearing the Thundershirt will make it much easier to quickly put on when needed and have the desired effect.

What customers are saying about the Thundershirt:
According to customers who have purchased and tried the Thundershirt on their dogs, it does seem to help calm their dogs, especially during thunderstorms.
One woman from Florida stated that her dalmatian was about 75% better during thunderstorms while wearing the Thundershirt. South Florida being the lightning capital of the world, I’m sure there are many dogs in that area who experience unprecedented panic during these storms and would benefit from the calming pressure exerted by the Thundershirt.
A dog trainer from Canada said she found success in lessening reactivity towards other dogs/people, excessive barking, and global fears through the use of this product.
It seems the most important factor in using the Thundershirt is to follow the instructions concerning first measuring and then fitting the shirt on your dog.
There were some negative remarks from customers saying the shirt made no difference in the reactions of their dog to a thunder storm or other stressful situations. My thoughts on that are the same as with pretty much any tool used in training a dog for anything. Some methods work for some dogs and not for others. Just as in training a dog in obedience, some dogs respond better to food rewards and others to verbal rewards or toys. Each dog is unique and there is no one item that will work on every dog. We just have to try what we think might work and go from there.
Another thing to keep in mind is that during hot summer months, neither the Thundershirt nor the Anxiety Wrap should be worn for long periods of time without supervision unless there is access to cooler temperatures such as an air conditioner. Either might cause over-heating and discomfort, even though both claim to use breathable fabric. This is merely my opinion and hopefully just common sense.
Again I will stress the importance of following the directions pertaining to fitting any type of anxiety wrap on your dog. The reason for it not working on some dogs may be due to improper fitting, or again, just the fact that there is no one thing that will work 100% of the time on all dogs.
For the most part, the Thundershirt seems to be a beneficial tool in helping your overly anxious dog find some solace and peace of mind during an event that can cause over-stimulation, such as a thunder storm.

I have read a couple of blogs about the anti-anxiety wrap for dogs and it sounds like a great idea. By squeezing the animal does it just constrict the blood flow to the brain and that is how it keeps them calm? And eventually the idea is to train them with it on so that you can take it off and still have the lasting effects right?
I really want to try these anxiety wraps because I want to help comfort my Maltese toy dog. She needs more comfort than what I have been able to provide during thunder storms when she begins to tremble with anxiety. I feel so bad for her even though I spend those times of anguish with her, comforting her and keeping her distracted. I hope this does not turn out to be a waste of money.
My dog doesn’t like fireworks at all, he will run and hide under anything he can find. Would this help him you think? He is pretty old and I don’t want him to have a heart attack this July when the fireworks start. How much do these run anyway, and how long would it take to get one? I have watched a video where it really helped a dog with anxiety.
While reading what James said, it was the first time I have heard about this thunder shirt (or any other brand of similar product) working by restricting blood to the brain of the animal. I certainly hope this is not the secret behind its effectiveness because that would make me think twice about buying one. I would not want to restrict blood flow to the brain for fear that could be harmful to the dog.
Deborah, no worries. This product does not restrict blood flow to the brain! It simply puts pressure on pressure points that actually soothe the dog sort of like a baby being snugly swaddled in blankets.
I wonder if the very name of this product was inspired by an inventor who owned a pet that suffered from anxiety during “thunder storms. That would make a whole lot of sense to me as it is aptly named after one of the most common sources of anxiety for dogs. I too, want to help my pet rid herself of her anxiety during thunder storms and whenever there are large scale fireworks shows near my home.
We’re all passionate about our pooches. We love them dearly and treat them as members of our family. Even though I don’t actually own pets, I am no different. One of my friends has two small dogs and I love them as if they were my own. So I’m hoping that this thunder vest works for one of her dogs who tends to experience anxiety attacks during certain times. I understand it’s not guaranteed to work in every case, but I’m hopeful.
